Hi Chris and Susan here...
Here we are again at the end of another week and dare we mention that it's 175 days to Christmas!
OK let's forget that one and look at some things that have happened this week in our world...
And let's face it we all feel like we're living inside some surreal movie right now
Just last night we watched a documentary on how the cruise ships were responsible for the spread of the virus before we even knew there was a virus called Covid-19 or a pandemic
But make no mistake a lot of people are in a lot of trouble and we're all sailing in uncharted waters that's for sure
A glimmer of light shone here for us as the Foreign Office confirmed the travel corridors that will opens up movement of travellers between a lot of countries
This is important to us because we have vacation rental properties in both Spain and France and we've been on tender hooks wondering what would happen to these businesses that have to 'wash their faces' for us...
No bookings means no income and that's a rocky road we certainly have been perilously travelling these past months
Our saviour of course has been our online education and training business which has been growing steadily
But as always we thing about you as one of our newsletter readers and we wonder if you have been faced with making some tough decisions
We've got friends and clients in all kinds of businesses (non just online businesses) and due to the Covid-19 thing they've seriously been considering closing and cutting their losses...
If you are like a lot of people right now, you are weighing up different options and having to make decisions and choices about things that you wouldn’t normally come up
It can be easy to either:
- get overwhelmed
- overthink and stuck in a state of paralysis
- make a bad decision
Or a combination of all three!
Fortunately, there is a very simple and quick tool you can use that is very effective when under stress or duress. It will help avoid making decisions and choices that are bad in the longer term, even if they do bring you some immediate relief. It works great in business or your personal life, small or large decisions
It’s a tool called the 10 1010 rule and was developed by Suzy Welch, there’s a book by that same title – check it out
Here’s a simplified version
When you have a choice or decision to make, reflect on the consequences in 10 minutes time, 10 months and 10 years
Normally, when making decisions under stress we just consider the immediate (10 minutes) impact, and we don’t consider the long term consequences. With the 10-10-10 Rule, you consider the immediate, mid and long-term consequences.
It's a simple method that you can use when you feel like your emotions are getting in the way of your decision making, which often is the case when you're faced with something big and important.
And especially when you're under stress, anxiety, or having to decide 'quickly'...
We don't want to make decisions we'll regret, so this rule helps to put things into perspective for you.
It also helps to overcome that 'temporary relief' that you may prefer initially, to look beyond that and think long term.
So if you need to you can take the exercise and we truly hope if this applies to you that it helps you get a clearer path in your decision making
Do let us know won't you
Have a good weekend
Until next time...
Much love ❤️
Chris and Susan
