We were on a team call the other day and the topic of freedom came up

And we all know that freedom means different things to different people

We know what it means to us and why we created a lifestyle business so that we could travel...

Live and work where we want (Spain and Portugal)

Spend more time with our friends and family 

Continue to support our chosen charity of providing education to less fortunate children in India 🇮🇳

But of course that all requires money

Because money isn't freedom but it is the route to freedom...

Financial Freedom

And if you're not quite financially free yet then here's what our mentor said on the call 

You may not like it (we saw a few gasps) but sometimes the truth needs to be told 

Here we go...

1. You’re never going to get there spending as much or more than you earn. 

2. No, you don’t deserve to have everything you want right now. The way you deserve what you want is by postponing the desire, until you can afford it.

3. Affording something does not mean you can make the monthly payment. It means you can pay cash for it.

4. Effort and skill are essential ingredients and you won’t get very far without them.

5. Consumer debt and interest payments are your evil enemies when it comes to building freedom. 

6. For the most part, financial institutions are not your friend. They care more about their best “interest” than they do about yours. Do not trust them for good financial advice.

7. Yes, Robert Kiyosaki was right, your house is NOT an asset. It will cost you, in hard numbers, way more money than it will make you (usually).

Now some of this is hard to stomach and we wish we had really paid more attention to it back in the days when life was good and we had good jobs and a good income...

But sadly as we found out the day the big recession of 2008 hit...

The day of reckoning does eventually come around

Now this was not meant as scaremongering but as sage advice 

The good news is, freedom IS possible because you can learn new things, think new thoughts and make important changes in life and business.

Looking back over our journey we believe we were sent on the path we were so we could ultimately help more people

We've been successful over the years but our message has always been the same 

We're here to help someone in or approaching retirement to generate an income to give them the freedom they are looking for

Starting a business or going freelance

If you want some autonomy over your work pattern, one option is to start your own business or work on a freelance or consultancy basis. 

It’s a popular choice for those continuing to work into their 60s: around 37% of workers over the age of 65 are self employed

Chris Beesley, 70, a former accountant, now runs an online coaching business with his wife Susan, 68, a former management consultant, advising others on how to top up their retirement income through self-employment. 

Chris says the barriers people often face include an overwhelm of information, fear of change and going out of your comfort zone, as well as a lack of plan to follow. 

He suggests finding something that you can do or want to do as a first step.

He says not to underestimate the value of the skills and experience you’ll have built up in your chosen career over the years.

“Retirement is a continuation of life. It used to be about getting to 65, stopping work and whiling away the time until the day came that you weren't here anymore,” says Chris. 

“But people are so much younger in their older years now. There is still so much more that you can do. Having an income can give you more choices – perhaps to travel or volunteer.”
